Members win third week of vacation after 5 years of service

Dear Local 2002 Jazz Maintenance members,

As reported previously, after the Memorandum of Settlement (MOS) failed to ratify, the grievance over the vacation entitlement for both JTS and Jazz Line was not resolved and we would need to proceed to Arbitration.

We are pleased to inform the membership that Unifor was finally able to settle the vacation grievance without having a 3rd party decide.

BACKGROUND

In the fall of 2019, the Canada Labour Code increased worker’s minimum vacation entitlement to 3 weeks of vacation after 5 years of service.

With this change in the labour code, the present collective agreement between the Jazz and Unifor surrounding vacation entitlement fell below the minimum legal standards, only offering three weeks of vacation after six years of consecutive employment.

Unifor engaged with the company and filed a grievance to correct the issue and to get members the benefits they are entitled to receive.

SETTLEMENT

Jazz has agreed that employees will be entitled to three weeks of vacation in their fifth year of employment. Additionally, Jazz will undertake a review of all employees who only received their third week of vacation after completion of their 6th year of employment and will advise these employees of their additional weeks vacation.

This separate one week ‘bank’ of vacation may be drawn down over the next two years by bidding on ad hoc open slots throughout the year. Should employees have a remainder in their bank after the two-year period, this will be paid out to them at today’s rate of pay.

We are happy that the parties were able to come to an agreement, especially before the vacation bid which is fast approaching.

As always, we will keep you posted on any new information. Feel free in the meantime to reach out to your union workplace representatives if you have questions. You could also contact your vice-president or bargaining chairpersons directly:
