On January 15th the Bargaining Committee met with
Jazz Senior Management to discuss the latest contracting-out request from the
Company. The Company clarified why it was still in this position and offered an
alternative arrangement to resolve the ongoing contracting-out issue. The Union
considers the Company’s explanation and plan as nothing more than status quo to
how they are currently operating. Further, the CAW identifies Jazz’s underlying
and predominant problem regarding this concern: the inability to staff itself
according to its operational requirements.
In response, the Union tabled a proposal that
would satisfy its members in order to agree with several of the Company’s
requests. As this proposal has a monetary value attached to it, the Company was
reluctant to agree. Despite this objection, the Union stood firm with their
request. The Union and Company did agree that management officials would take
some time to review all elements of this meting and reconvene on January 23rd
2008 to conclude this process. Failing a satisfactory resolution, the Union and
Company will have no choice but to appear in front of Chief Arbitrator Mr. M.
Teplitsky.
