We want to bring to your attention that despite the Union’s objections, the company is proceeding with the implementation of
Send Word Now (SWN) technology to assign shifts in reverse seniority order to eligible employees, as per Article L1.04.05 of our collective agreement.
Background: In July 2024, Unifor was officially notified by the company of their intent to use this technology for shift assignments. In the past several weeks, your bargaining committee has held extensive discussions with the employer to express our concerns. On November 6th, during a Union-Management Headquarters (UMHQ) meeting, your bargaining committee strongly discouraged the employer from using this technology.
What's Happening Next: Despite the Union’s lack of consent, the employer has decided to move forward with the implementation of SWN technology, effective
December 1st, 2024. This technology will be used to assign shifts based on reverse seniority, as outlined in the company’s notice.
For full details, please refer to the Company’s SWN Memo – Notice to Union (
link included).
What Does This Mean for You? Rest assured; your Union is closely monitoring the situation. If at any point the company does not adhere to the terms of our collective agreement or Letter of Understanding 1 (LOU 1), we will not hesitate to file a grievance on behalf of our members.
What Should You Do?
If you have any concerns about the implementation of the SWN system, please do not hesitate to contact your Union representative. If you are uncomfortable with assigning shifts to a co-worker through the SWN system, you are encouraged to communicate your concerns directly to your manager.
The Union stands in solidarity with all members, and we will continue to fight for your rights and interests under the collective agreement.
In Solidarity,
Your Unifor Bargaining Committee
