Today, on International Workers' Day, Unifor members across Canada proudly join working people around the world in celebrating the collective power, resilience, and achievements of the labour movement. Today should also serve as a reminder of what we have accomplished through decades of solidarity, years of struggle, and what we must continue to fight for – fair wages, safe workplaces, and respect from employers.
As proud Unifor members, we know that workers are the backbone of Canada's economy. That's why we remain steadfast in our commitment to protect Canadian jobs and we must continue to stand up for workers' rights, ensuring that all working people are treated with the dignity they deserve. Since its creation, Unifor has strived to protect the rights of members and every member of the workforce (employed or unemployed). This is something that is ingrained in who we are and what we stand for as a Union.
This year, as we face growing political and economic uncertainty from the United States and the Trump administration, one thing must be made clear; Canada is not for sale and we will never become the 51st state. Canada has its own identity. We have our own values, and have a proud tradition of standing up for working people. We will not be dragged down by political division, fear, and greed that has surfaced south of our boarder. The Canadian labour movement stands firmly against any attempt to erode our sovereignty, our democratic principles, or our hard-won workers’ rights.
Unifor is not only defending what we have built, we are also laying the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous Canada. In time, this will mean more jobs, more economic growth and a more resilient Canadian economy. Our union will continue to organize, fight for good jobs, and put people before profits.
Together, we will chart our own path; one rooted in unity, fairness, and strength.
In solidarity,
Tammy Moore
