Dear Unifor 2002 Members,
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) Awareness Day is fast approaching, and we urge all members to take part in recognizing this important health and safety issue on
February 28, 2025.
What is RSI? Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) refers to a condition caused by the overuse of specific body parts, particularly the hands, wrists, arms, and shoulders. It can result from prolonged repetitive movements or poor ergonomics at work, such as long hours spent typing, using a mouse, or performing manual labour. Left untreated, RSI can lead to pain, discomfort, and even long-term physical damage. Common manifestations of RSI include tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other musculoskeletal disorders.
Why is RSI a Concern? RSI is especially prevalent in industries involving frequent repetitive tasks, which puts workers at higher risk for chronic pain and disability. Early intervention is key. Symptoms like pain, swelling, tingling, and numbness should be reported immediately to your employer so that adjustments can be made to reduce strain and prevent further injury.
How Unifor is Taking Action: Unifor 2002 has long been a strong advocate for improved workplace conditions, including ergonomics programs and protective measures to prevent RSI. Through collective action, we can secure safer working conditions, negotiate better training, and ensure compensation for work-related injuries, including RSI. It is vital that we remain proactive in safeguarding our health and our rights at work.
How You Can Get Involved: Unifor 2002 encourages all members to familiarize themselves with the resources provided below, which will help you understand how to prevent and address RSI:
In addition to the above, there are checklists and online courses available, and there are additional resources, including checklists and online courses, at the
Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) and the
