Yesterday, members of Unifor Local 2002 gathered in Montreal, Quebec, to participate in an Eastern Region leadership meeting. Unifor members from Jazz Aviation, Swissport, Aéroport de Québec, Air Canada’s Inflight and Mainline groups attended the event that focussed on strengthening solidarity across the region and addressing common workplace issues.
The strong turnout demonstrated the continued commitment of the membership in building a united, responsive, and forward-looking union. The meeting also focused on the evolving role and responsibilities of trade unions during a period of economic uncertainty and social change in Canada.
"With ongoing pressures facing airline workers across Canada, we need progressive leadership and accountability," said Unifor Local 2002 Vice President Patricia Sabourin. "Employers in this country need to respect the work we all perform. Our airline and aviation members continue to play a vital part in Canada’s economic growth."
Last month, Unifor representatives traveled to Ottawa to meet with Members of Parliament and discuss protecting Canadian jobs in the shadow of ongoing U.S. imposed tariffs; an issue heavily impacting the province of Quebec.
"Quebec has always been a powerful force within the labour movement," said Unifor Local 2002 President Tammy Moore. "Yesterday's discussions reinforced how important it is that we continue to build bridges across regions while addressing the specific realities our members face here."
At a separate event on Wednesday, Unifor members took part in the General Assembly on Trade Unionism. This is a unique forum for reflection in Quebec that brought together over 500 activists from the province’s main union organizations. The aim of this initiative was to re-examine the role and approach of the labour movement and to identify concrete solutions for dealing with current and future challenges.
