Unifor Local 2002 elected District representatives have a defined responsibility, set out in the Unifor Constitution and the Local 2002 Bylaws to uphold the Oath of Office in the best interests of the membership.
The Local has recently been made aware of actions by several members of District 266 leadership team that are inconsistent with these responsibilities. There is nothing wrong with holding differing views or perspectives within our union; that is part of a healthy democracy. However, leadership positions come with obligations. Actions taken by elected leaders must be consistent with the collective efforts of the Local and aligned with the mandate they were entrusted to uphold. One cannot simultaneously hold a leadership role and act in ways that undermine the responsibilities of that role.
When an elected leader no longer supports and/or is unwilling to uphold the duties and principles of their position, the appropriate and accountable step is to resign from their union position. Accordingly, those District 266 leaders will be asked to step down from their roles effective immediately.
The Unifor Constitution also provides clear processes for addressing situations where leaders act outside their mandate. While we expect those involved to act responsibly and voluntarily resign, these constitutional avenues remain available to ensure adherence to the standards of elected office.
Unifor Local 2002 remains committed to ensuring that the members of District 266 receive representation that is consistent, accountable, and aligned with our collective responsibilities.
In Solidarity,
Tammy Moore – President, Unifor Local 2002
Kelly Wilson – Bargaining Committee Chairperson/District Chairperson
Harold Bateman – Assistant to the Unifor Local 2002 President
