Air Canada Aeroplan: Update from your bargaining committee

Air Canada Aeroplan: Update from your bargaining committee

November 29, 2024 at 5:00 PM

Unifor has officially sent a notice to bargaining to the employer with initial meeting dates scheduled for December 2024. We will keep you updated as we work towards getting a new deal for the membership.

In-person and virtual membership bargaining meetings took place back in October for the Vancouver and Montreal locations. Your Unifor bargaining committee would like to thank all members that attended.

UNION-MANAGEMENT MEETINGS

Unifor Local 2002 has concluded the most recent round of UMHQ meetings held in Toronto. These are quarterly meetings where the district chairpersons, bargaining representatives, and Unifor national representative(s) meet to discuss upcoming changes, and/or issues that have not been resolved at the local level. At this meeting, the recent changes to the attendance management process were discussed. Unifor strongly opposed the employer’s punitive approach to attendance management, emphasizing that bypassing progressive discipline is both unethical and widely disapproved of by Arbitrators. The union reaffirmed its commitment to continue grieving against instances of excessive discipline. Concerns were raised concerning the mismanagement of (L11) and the employer’s use of AI (Artificial Intelligence). System issues were again highlighted as "ongoing."

UPDATES FROM THE EMPLOYER

The union has been advised that the hours of operations will be changing in the spring of 2025. Montreal hours of operation will be from 0500-0030, while Vancouver hours of operation will be from 0600-0000. Hiring will continue in January, February and March of 2025 with new classes planned for those months.

FORECASTING AHEAD

With significant challenges ahead, the union is urging all agents to remain vigilant and cautious about not exceeding their sick and family responsibility allotments.

There are currently 4 outstanding Policy grievances where we are waiting for a response from the Employer and many individual grievances coming out of both offices.

The employer is taking a punitive approach toward KPIs (key performance indicators), attendance management, and often neglecting common sense. Management seems to have forgotten the importance of relationship-building, support, and coaching, which should be prioritized. If you notice anything unusual or feel that disciplinary actions are unfair or excessive, please do not hesitate to reach out to your union representative. Your Union team is here to support you and ensure fairness in all proceedings.
