Effective immediately, as a result of a recent policy grievance by the Air Canada Bargaining Committee, we are pleased to announce a change regarding the use of paid sick days after returning from a medical leave, such as GIDIP.
The following applies only to the first 30 calendar days after returning from medical leave (GIDIP or Other Medical Leave):
If you are unable to report to work due to illness or medical appointment within the first 30 days after returning from a medical leave, you may now use any remaining paid sick days from your annual 10-day allotment during this period. Previously, employees were required to either return to the insurer (GIDIP) or provide a doctor’s note for any single-day absence during the 30-day window immediately following medical leave.
To ensure you are correctly coded and paid, it is essential to follow these steps:
-
REPORTING SICK:
When calling the Airport Attendance line or Contact Center Operational Control Attendance line/voicemail, explicitly state that you are using your remaining Canadian Labour Code (CLC) 10-PAID sick days. This will ensure accurate coding and payment.
-
DOCTOR’S NOTE:
If you report sick for five or more consecutive shifts, you may be asked to provide a doctor’s note.
Important Reminders:
If you do not have any remaining days in your 10 paid day allotment, the standard company policy will apply. You may be eligible for GIDIP if you meet the criteria, or you may need to provide a doctor’s note confirming your ability to return to work with full duties and hours.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your District Chairperson for assistance.
