Air Canada targets members on LTD for termination

Air Canada targets members on LTD for termination

November 9, 2016 at 1:21 PM

Several months ago, Unifor members at Air Canada receiving Long Term Disability (LTD) benefits were advised by the company that if they were unable to return to work, their employment with Air Canada would be terminated.

Local 2002 immediately sought council with the Unifor legal department and filed a policy grievance. When the company proceeded with terminations the union requested that a “cease and desist” order be put in place while the matter goes through the arbitration process. The request was granted and as a result, Air Canada will not proceed with any of the terminations and, no further termination letters will be issued until the issue is resolved.

The arbitration has begun before Arbitrator Peter Chauvin and it will be a lengthy process. CUPE and IAMAW members on LTD have also been impacted and are engaged in similar arbitrations.

This attack on our most vulnerable members can seriously affect not only their income and their access to benefits but future members who find themselves on LTD. We will continue to keep you informed as the process continues.
