Canadian North AME membership update

On September 30th, Canadian North Inc. filed an application with the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to amalgamate the bargaining units as a result of the sale of business between Bradley Air Services Limited (operating as "First Air") and Canadian North Inc. This amalgamation will bring together the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) under a single unionized bargaining unit, pursuant to sections 18.1, 44, and 45 of the Canada Labour Code, Part I, R.S.C. 1985, c. L-2 (the "Code").

A share purchase agreement was signed on September 28, 2018 for the sale of Canadian North to First Air. The jointly formed company – utilizing the 'Canadian North' operating name and First Air's inukshuk as its logo – officially began joint operations on November 1, 2019.

As a result of this purchase, there are now two separate bargaining agents which represent the AME's at Canadian North; Unifor and Group Association First Air Employees (GAFAE). Both parties have responded to the CIRB regarding Canadian North's application for the proposed bargaining structure. Now, both parties have an option to discuss (and potential jointly agree) to the impact of the working conditions, job functions and composition of the new bargaining unit. If these discussions do not come to fruition, then procedural guidelines will follow which will be determined by the CIRB.

At this time, we do not have a definitive date on when the process will be completed. We will continue to provide updates as soon as additional information is available. To ensure you receive the up to date information, please subscribe to Unifor 2002 e-news at unifor2002.org.
