Dear Local 2002 Jazz Maintenance members,

Last week, Unifor was put on notice of the company’s intent to close Halifax Line Maintenance, impacting 14 of our members.

Jazz put out a communication on Friday September 20th confirming their decision to lay off all employees in Halifax Line on October 14, 2024.

The layoffs will be effective on the October schedule, when Jazz will no longer operate any revenue flights for Air Canada Express in or out of YHZ. All passengers flying from YHZ will be on aircraft operated by PAL Airlines.

This closure follows the shuttering of Winnipeg in March 2024 and the Quebec City base in May 2022. Unfortunately like with those closures, it is not expected that Jazz will regain any of these routes in the foreseeable future.

Unifor has reached out to Jazz to request an urgent meeting. This meeting is scheduled to take place today – September 25 – where we will discuss options to mitigate the impact, and review the provisions provided under the current collective agreement. In the meantime, Unifor will continue to support our members in all ways required.

To add insult to injury, it came to our attention that over this past weekend, the company contracted out some Line Maintenance work in Halifax. Unifor is outraged by this callous treatment by the company, discarding and disrespecting these long serving workers. You won’t stand for this, and neither will we.

Your bargaining committee is in the process of a grievance investigation to gather additional facts and details in order to prepare ourself to fight this decision to outsource work. If need be, we will use the expertise of the Unifor legal to assist us in determining what methods we can employ to stop this ongoing issue.

Make no mistake – if the employer is in violation, Unifor will challenge their actions and stand up for our rights as workers in order to hold them accountable.

As always, we will keep you posted on any new information. Feel free in the meantime to reach out to your union workplace representatives if you have questions. You could also contact your vice-president or bargaining chairpersons directly:
