The Bargaining Committee was scheduled to meet from June 8 through to June 11th, 2009. Unfortunately, near the end of the second day, talks with the company broke off.
Nearly half of our membership is part-time and there were many discussions regarding part-time rules.
The Bargaining Committee is also considering the impact of the Air Canada mainline tentative agreement regarding the Jazz employees in YYT (St. John’s).
We were scheduled to talk about the shared small base agreements but Jazz was not prepared to make any commitment. We are waiting for the Company to give us a firm response on the small base issues.
We are considering all options prior to the scheduling meetings with the company up to and including Federal Conciliation.
If the CAW files for Conciliation, this is the process that will be followed:
Once the formal appointment of a Conciliation Officer has been completed, time lines come into place. First, there is a sixty-day Conciliation Process whereby the Officer will assist in areas requested by the parties. After the sixty-day period has elapsed, the Officer takes on more of a Mediator role and will attempt to get the Parties moving in areas that are deemed close to resolution. This period will last twenty-one (21) days. If there is reason to believe the parties are close to a “Deal” and need more time with the Officer, both Parties can mutually agree to extend the process to reach a resolution. Failing a resolution, this process will have been deemed to have met the guidelines set out by the Canada Labour Code. Therefore with a Legal Strike Vote in place and the seventy-two (72) hours notice filed, the Parties would find themselves in a Legal Strike or Lock Out position.
The next scheduled meetings with the Company are on July 6th through July 9th. We will continue to work vigorously on your behalf and will keep you informed of any developments.
