Following our previous updates regarding the Newfoundland and Labrador base closure, we are providing a brief status report on the ongoing arbitration process.
UPDATE ON HEARING SCHEDULE
As you are aware, your Bargaining Committee met with Arbitrator Wright and Jazz management in Toronto on July 10, 2025, to begin the arbitration hearing.
A production hearing was originally scheduled to take place today, March 24, 2026. However, due to the recent incident at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) this week, all parties have agreed that resources and attention must be directed toward the immediate situation.
Consequently, the parties have mutually agreed to reschedule the motion to May 1, 2026.
WHAT IS 'PRODUCTION HEARING'?
We understand that legal terminology can be confusing. To clarify: A production hearing in labour arbitration is a procedural meeting held to resolve disputes over document disclosure.
During this phase, the Union requests specific documents and data from the company that are necessary to build our case. If the company refuses to provide certain records, the Arbitrator steps in during this hearing to decide what must be handed over. This ensures that the Union has all the facts needed to represent your interests effectively during the final arguments.
NEXT STEPS
Your Bargaining Committee remains fully committed to challenging this base closure and ensuring the collective agreement is upheld. We will continue to keep you informed as we approach the new May 1st date.
