Greetings,
The Bargaining Committee took office as of December 1, 2024 for a new three year term. The committee met in Toronto for their first meeting on December 3 and we are happy to introduce your new Bargaining Committee.
Left to right: Surinder Jhalli (YVR), Roberto Lampasona (Tech 2), Pete Mancuso (YUL), Scott Mcilmoyle (National Staff Rep), Jan Drzewiecki (YYC), Ryan Boundy (YYZ), Tammy Moore (Local 2002 President)
CHAIRPERSON
One of the primary functions of the initial meeting is for the committee to elect a chairperson in accordance with the Local 2002 Bylaws. Ryan Boundy has been elected as the Bargaining Chair and has the support from the Local, the National and most importantly the rest of the committee.
TRAINING
Unifor has a training centre in Port Elgin ON, which is on the shore of Lake Huron. Roberto Lampasona, Pete Mancuso and Surinder Jhalli will be taking the last Collective Bargaining Course of the year Dec 8 to 13, 2024. Ryan Boundy and Jan Drzewiecki have recently completed this same course.
SURVEYS
The results of the surveys were given an initial review as a committee. Thanks to those that participated. Not surprising to anyone wages were a primary focus, but there were some interesting suggestions outside of that. The committee discussed holding proposal meetings, to hear directly from you and to further help formulate a proposal package for bargaining.
COMMITMENT
As a new committee, Scott Mcilmoyle gave the oath of office in accordance with the Unifor Constitution. The committee made a commitment to work as a team, to invoke positive change, support each other and explore new ideas to meet membership expectations of a much needed and overdue industry wage level without a divisive second tier.
MEDIATED ARBITRATION
On December 4, Jazz and Unifor secured an opening in arbitrator Mark Wrights’s schedule, successfully resolving four grievances—all with favorable outcomes. Your new bargaining chair, Ryan Boundy, and YYZ District Chair, Mike Emery, played a pivotal role in presenting the details and context for two YYZ grievances, achieving successful mediated settlements for both. Similarly, Pete Mancuso, your YUL bargaining representative, and Roberto Lampasona, your Tech 2 bargaining representative, delivered compelling evidence and arguments that led to positive outcomes for two outstanding YUL grievances. This marks a strong start for our new team, showcasing their commitment and effectiveness. We're already working diligently to secure more arbitration dates to address additional unresolved matters, including the critical contracting-out grievances.
BARGAINING NEXT STEPS
We are all aware that there is a pending representational challenge. Obviously Jazz will not give us a bargaining date in January until this process runs its course. A bulletin outlining the process has just been issued. A representational challenge will definitely delay bargaining, however Unifor and the Committee will not sit idle. We have taken the steps we promised: Bargaining Surveys, new Bargaining Committee, new National Representative, the committee has just had its first meeting, they have reviewed surveys, the successfully arbitrated some outstanding grievances, training is being provided, and they are looking at getting proposal meetings set up early in the new year. We are committed to continue to press forward in preparation for early bargaining so that we are ready to go to minimize the delay this is causing. We thank you for your patience and support.
