The Executive Board of CAW Local 2002 wishes to
announce the appointment of Francois Desjardins as National Organizing
Coordinator for the CAW’s Airline Division. Francois will be based at the CAW’s
Vancouver office.
Francois’ primary responsibilities are to assist
the President in implementing the Airline Division’s organizing strategies. That
will be to locate, research, and run campaigns to bring new members into the
CAW. Francois will work closely with the National Organizing Department and
deliver training programs to Community Based Organizers (CBO’s). CBO’s will be
the primary contacts for employees in non-unionized companies who want to join
the CAW. The CAW will be circulating more information about the CBO positions
that will be posted for job application.
“I am totally committed to helping employees who
are not yet union members join the CAW. A recent opinion poll recognized that
two-thirds of Canadians want to be union members. In 2005 Statistics Canada
clearly demonstrated that on average unionized employees make more money, have
better benefits and stronger pensions than employees who are not unionized,”
said Francois. “I want to build a strong team of CBO’s that will help other
Canadians enjoy the benefits of union membership.”
Francois has a solid background Union Organizing.
He has been a CALEA/CAW member for over 20 years and was first elected in 1989
as District Chair in Edmonton Reservations. Over the years Francois was involved
in various organizing campaigns with the CAW and other unions. He was National
Organizer for ACTRA (a film industry union) and is currently the District
Chairperson for Aeroplan Vancouver.
