Unifor Local 2002 stands together this Latin American Heritage Month, drawing inspiration from the stories, struggles, and dreams of our members and their families. As the Central Region Vice President, and the proud son of a Mexican immigrant farm worker, I am reminded every day of our union’s values – solidarity, equality, and justice. These values are brought to life through the voices of each member.
Our diversity is not just a strength; it is a gift that has shaped Canada’s labour history and continues to push us forward. Every member’s unique journey enriches our movement, making Unifor a place where hope is built on compassion and collective action. Latin American Heritage Month reminds us that no matter where we come from, we rise higher when we lift each other up. As Dolores Huerta, the legendary labour leader, reminds us: “Sí se puede” – yes, it can be done.
Unifor believes that change begins with its members. Your voices demand safe and fair workplaces, your courage challenges injustice, and your unity brings real progress. When we come together – in the spirit of compassion and pride – barriers crumble and new possibilities are born. As Pierre Trudeau once said, “What the world should be seeking, and what in Canada we must continue to cherish, are not concepts of uniformity but human values: compassion, love, and understanding”.
The sacrifices of all immigrants and more specifically Latin American families, and their stories of perseverance, and the victories won through solidarity are our guiding light. As Sonia Sotomayor teaches, “The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever.” Each of us brings our flames of hope and resilience to the union’s mission. Justin Trudeau adds, “Canadians are of every possible colour, culture, and creed… our national identity is based on shared values such as openness, respect, compassion, justice, equality, and opportunity… strong not in spite of our differences but because of them”.
Let this month fuel our resolve to keep pushing for dignity, equity, and justice for all. The world and Canada are calling for new solutions, and as a union we are answering. United, we are powerful beyond measure.
Carry this pride forward. Believe in the strength of your voice. Together, we build a future where everyone belongs, thrives, and inspires the next generation to dream even bigger.
