Open letter to WestJet Pilots represented by ALPA

Dear WestJet pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA),

I am writing to convey Unifor Local 2002’s full and unwavering support and solidarity with WestJet pilots who face a potential legal strike.

Air travel has been, and remains, a critical component to Canada's economic growth and prosperity. As President of one of Unifor’s largest Unifor locals, the Chairperson of Unifor Aviation Council, and a fellow airline employee, I understand and respect the economic obligations that Canada’s aviation sector has on our country. However, these factors are not plausible if the company and its employees cannot come to a fair and mutual agreement.

Collective bargaining and the methods put in place to obtain a just and fiscally responsible contract must be adhered to. Unfortunately, after months of negotiations, WestJet management has failed to understand the needs of its pilot group. Your daily efforts contribute to the growth and prosperity of the company, which in turn contributes to Canada’s development. Without you, WestJet’s fleet will be grounded and operations will be effectively shuttered.

You are dedicated professionals responsible for the safety of countless flights and the passengers aboard. You and your fellow pilots have consistently demonstrated your commitment to excellence and the highest standards of aviation, making WestJet one of Canada’s most trusted airlines.

Unifor firmly believes that the rights and welfare of all pilots are paramount in maintaining a safe and robust aviation industry. We acknowledge the crucial role that you play in ensuring the ongoing operation of the airline and we recognize the immense responsibility placed upon your shoulders.

We stand with you and support you during this pivotal time.

In solidarity,

Tammy Moore, President
Unifor Local 2002
