Friends, Sisters, Brothers, Siblings, and all Unifor family,
Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Indigenous Survivors and the children who never came home. While Canada reflects on the 10 years since the TRC’s Calls to Action, the need for justice and real reconciliation is as urgent as ever. Recent cuts to essential services remind us how much work is left to do, and why solidarity matters now more than ever.
Unifor stands with Indigenous workers and families in this ongoing struggle. This year, Unifor commissioned new artwork by acclaimed Indigenous artist Christina Dumas to commemorate this day, inspiring members coast to coast. Our union has made Truth and Reconciliation a collective bargaining priority, pushing to secure September 30 as a statutory holiday in more workplaces, and we encourage locals in Ontario and beyond to make this part of their bargaining agenda.
Our union’s commitment also shows up year-round: from supporting members’ participation in community events, to offering education and reflection resources, and organizing national conferences like our Black, Indigenous and Workers of Colour (BIWOC) Conference focused on healing, justice, and solidarity.
This day, and every day, Unifor members pledge to take action—challenging racism, amplifying Indigenous voices, and creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive workplaces. Reconciliation is a journey we take together with hope, honesty, and commitment to real change.
