On May 17, 2023, the employer issued a communiqué to GardaWorld employees at Calgary Airport concerning attendance management. The bulletin outlines what management sees as a "pattern" for some individuals not meeting the service requirements as a result of employee absenteeism.
Unifor strongly believes that this communiqué was ill conceived and should not have been issued to GardaWorld employees covered by Unifor and its Local 2002. Any issues pertaining to attendance and/or absenteeism should be delt with on an individual basis with a union representative present at the meeting.
Additionally, Unifor representatives were not privy or consulted on GardaWorld’s bulletin which clearly is not in line with the collective agreement. Article 6 of the CBA states, "When an employee is aware that they will be late for the scheduled starting time of their shift, they shall report the fact to the employer as soon as possible. An employee who calls to inform the employer that they will be late and still reports to work shall be noted as late for that shift."
Unifor is putting GardaWorld on notice and will await a response from management to this violation.
Unifor members at GardaWorld Calgary Airport are dedicated and highly-trained screening officers. They are specialized professionals tasked with protecting air travelers by screening them and their belongings while demonstrating the highest degree of vigilance. Unifor expects the same professionalism from the employer when it comes to issues pertaining to management/employee communications.
