Last week, Unifor representatives met with the employer in hopes of resolving the winter shift bid issue that has been causing immense frustration amongst the hardworking Paladin members at Calgary Airport.
The initial bid presentation from the employer did not contain any 10-hour shifts, which clearly did not satisfy the requirements of the shift committee or the membership. Despite the continuing efforts and the unwavering determination of the Unifor Shift Committee and District Chairperson to build an improved bid, the original meetings proved to be futile as employer was not willing to discuss options of correcting the situation.
Earlier this week, your elected District Chairperson and the Unifor Shift Committee met once again with the employer to resolve the shift bid concerns. The group was steadfast in their approach and would not allow the dissatisfaction of the membership to continue any further. Your Unifor team was able to modify the bid and they have now secured more than one-hundred 10-hour shifts for the members. This new shift-build has been approved and is now being implemented by the employer.
"Unifor has definitely had challenges with this employer, but we are grateful to have been able to resolve this issue collectively," said Unifor Local 2002 President Tammy Moore. "It is clear that this workplace discontent could have been averted by simply working with our Unifor team and building suitable operational requirements in the first place. Congratulations to the Kelly and everyone involved in securing this improved bid schedule."
The union is pleased with these results and commend the team’s actions as they were far more successful and quicker than the grievance process would have been. Additionally, the team was able to successfully argue that the employer had failed its obligations adhering to the collective agreement.
Unifor members at Paladin Airport Security Services (PASS) are highly-trained and skilled specialists that keep Calgary Airport functioning each and every day. Creating an appropriate and member-acceptable shift schedule is essential to maintain not only employer operational requirements, but those of Calgary International Airport. Unifor and its Local 2002 applauds the workplace leadership for this accomplishment and will work with all elected union representatives at PASS to improve collective bargaining language for future improvements.
