Paladin District 266: Update – Part-Time Benefit Deduction Repayment Plan

Paladin District 266: Update – Part-Time Benefit Deduction Repayment Plan

August 5, 2025 at 5:30 PM

The Unifor district union office raised the issue of missed benefit deductions for most part-time employees (including Health, Life, Dental, and Accidental Death & Dismemberment) with the Company in June 2024. These deductions had not been applied since April 1, 2024.

The Company did advise those affected part-time members on June 10, 2025, that the monetary corrections and recovery of arrears would be forthcoming.

On July 31, 2025, the Company communicated via email with those affected part-time members that this error would be adjusted. The details of the Company’s message outlined the following:

  • The exact amount owed for benefit premiums, and

  • A repayment plan consisting of:

    • Half a month's benefit premiums for the current month, and

    • Half a month's benefit premiums toward arrears.

If you are in agreement with the repayment plan as outlined, no action is required on your part.

If the amount being deducted per pay is too high for you, please contact Payroll immediately to propose a more manageable repayment amount. The Company has committed to working with members to find a mutually agreeable bi-weekly payment amount.

There has been some confusion on social media regarding whether the Company can legally deduct these arrears. To clarify:

Because we are federally regulated and covered by a valid Collective Bargaining Agreement – which includes provisions for payroll overpayments and deductions – the Company is within its legal right to collect these missed contributions. Members also have the right to request a different bi-weekly repayment amount before the deadline of August 20, 2025.

IMPORTANT

If you do not contact the Payroll Department, or you only state your disagreement without proposing an alternative payment amount, the full amount (as outlined in the July 31st Company communication) will be automatically deducted starting with the September 4, 2025 pay. This date has been confirmed with the Company's Senior Payroll Manager.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the payroll department or myself.
