Swissport: free ride over for employer

The Unifor Bargaining Committee met with the Company this week on November 21-23 where we continued our discussions on monetary-related issues. The Company – to date – has been unresponsive to the financial needs and concerns of our members. Needless to say, progress has been very slow.

Our members have been without significant monetary improvements for almost a decade. Most ground handlers and other airport service employers at Vancouver Airport are already paying much higher wages than Swissport. However, this company fails to recognize the members’ hard work and dedication which is necessary to allow Swissport to prosper in this challenging market. They refuse to negotiate what you – the members – need to have as a basic living wage in the most expensive city in Canada.

Members need to let their employer know that this inaction at the bargaining table needs to stop immediately. Swissport is the world's largest provider of ground and cargo handling services in the aviation industry. It provides services on behalf of more than 800 clients and handles more than 200 million passengers and 4.1 million flights per year. This Company needs to start negotiating now and in today’s economy! We will not stand by and let Swissport further erode our basic need to survive. Swissport needs to understand that the free ride is over after more than a decade!

Your Bargaining Committee is committed to keeping you informed throughout the negotiations.
